Waiting began with a curiosity about the lives of soldiers coming back from Iraq. Raised as a pacifist, my contact with combat officers was quite limited and I headed to the V.A. hospital armed with a sketch book as a mediator. In the lobby I found men who served in Vietnam and Korea. I spoke with them while drawing their portraits. This exploration led me to a similar process on a corner frequented by men waiting to be picked up for work. These Day Laborers come from Mexico and Central America in search of work to support their families in their home countries. The quiet of a hospital waiting room to the early morning chill of a street corner, these drawings suggest a trace of a conversation between two people waiting.(2008)
