In-Between Here & There: A Picnic for Mixed Race* Women
Inspired by the "HERE/THERE" Oakland/Berkeley border sculpture by Steve Gillman and Katherine Keefer, a picnic began in-between the two words. Now a mobile picnic, in-between locations across the country spark the material of dialogue and exchange. Collaborations with cultural nourishers like Justus Kitchen, Wendi Anderson and local food farmers like Bottoms Up Community Garden provide seasonal dishes to honor the moment. Together we explore the over looked power of in-between-ness. What is gained by being incognito, by splitting, choosing, infiltration, and the push-pull of color, culture, and community?
Power can look like many things and sometimes she is assumed or unrecognizable...The artist welcomes self-identified mixed race women to take a moment together to relish the power of in between-ness: of slippage, of fuzzy, frizzy, straight, unruly, freckly, caramel, obsidian, ochre and alabaster.
* I wish to recognize the social construction of this term and it's very real effect on our lives.
